ECVT Colins
Electrical capacitance volume tomography applied to bulk coal. Moisture content, ash fraction, and density variations resolved non-invasively as coal moves through bunkers, chutes, and stockpiles — without sampling, contact, or process interruption.
A field-deployable ECVT system for continuous coal quality assessment.
ECVT Colins is a real-time coal quality inspection instrument, built directly on Material Inspection research rather than the process-imaging line. Its planar and conforming sensor geometries come from research into which configuration reads best through flat versus curved structures, and that same framework's proven extension to bulk permittivity mapping — reading moisture distribution through packed granular media — is the direct precedent for grading moisture, ash fraction, and density through a bulk coal mass without extracting a sample.
The instrument mounts externally on bunker walls, chute sections, or conveyor transfer points. No penetration, no contact with the coal stream, no sampling probes. T-configuration CMOS switching — an architecture engineered specifically to strip stray capacitance out of ECVT hardware — eliminates parasitic signal at the circuit level, exposing the genuine dielectric contrast between moisture, ash, and carbon content at sub-femtofarad precision, a signal magnitude standard capacitance systems cannot resolve in dense bulk solids.
The same dielectric-contrast principle has been field-validated in bulk mineral processing, where real-time column flotation monitoring of sulphide ore used a multi-channel capacitance sensor to track solids concentration through the collection zone as collector and frother dosing changed. ECVT Colins applies that same real-time, non-sampling compositional read to coal — continuous, non-destructive grading in place of manual sampling and laboratory assay.
From exterior electrode to quality data — without sampling the coal.
Where ECVT Colins is deployed.
Coal Bunkers & Silos
Continuous moisture and density monitoring as coal is drawn down — catching stratification and moisture pockets before they reach the boiler.
Conveyor Transfer Points
In-line quality assessment at transfer chutes, without slowing throughput or extracting samples.
Stockpile Moisture Mapping
External sensor arrays profile moisture gradients through open or covered stockpiles.
Blend Verification
Real-time confirmation that blended coal streams meet target composition before entering the boiler feed.
Contamination Detection
Density and permittivity anomalies flag tramp metal, rock, or other foreign material in the coal stream.
Power Plant Fuel Intake
Continuous quality grading at the fuel intake — replacing periodic manual sampling with real-time data.
